The 1975 Will Now Only Play Shows With Multiple Women, Non-Binary Artists

The 1975 is taking another step to being as inclusive as possible.

On Wednesday (February 12), Matty Healy tweeted about the mostly male lineup of the Reading and Leeds festivals in England this year.

While the iconic festivals boast names like Rage Against the Machine, Liam Gallagher, Migos, and Stormzy, there is an overwhelming lack of women and non-binary performers on the bill.

“There mustn’t be an ounce of j**** left between the dark fruits Twitter community after that Reading and Leeds line up,” he tweeted the day before. He also added a reply to a fan explaining, “It’s just very ‘lads on tour get the bevs’ in’ kind of vibe. Looks fun and messy and v masc.”

But he didn't stop there and be all talk. Healy actually vowed to make a real change moving forward when the 1975 sign on to play festivals. After a music editor tweeted the frontman urging him to consider adding an inclusion rider to The 1975's festival contracts, he wasted no time taking the pledge.

“Take this as me signing this contract — I have agreed to some festivals already that may not adhere to this and I would never let fans down who already have tickets,” he wrote. “But from now I will and believe this is how male artist[s] can be true allies.”

Along with this new inclusion rider, the band has already endorsed an emergency climate change campaign as well as creating more eco-friendly merch. Healy also wants to play cities that share more conservative views so he can help broaden people's education.

The 1975's upcoming album, Notes on a Conditional Form, will be released April 24.
